How a little rain makes a difference
The dam was empty, bone dry and covered in cracked clay.

The weather was hot and the land had dried out earlier than most seasons.
A couple of trees and a lot of the other vegetation at the local school were extremely water stressed. Their leaves were curled up and crackly to touch.
The bush fires continued to occur with call outs to fires occurring right up to and including Christmas eve afternoon.

There was also all the end of year functions, carols were sung, dances were danced, presents were purchased and wrapped, special birthdays shared and a special concert was attended.

Then something really remarkable occurred.
Tropical Cyclone Laurence spun into the Western Australian town of Broome.
The cyclone was full of moisture and momentum, unusually, it continued on into the heart of barren dry Australia.
Most of the inland of the States of NSW and QLD received good falls of rain. Rivers and creeks that have been barren for many years burst into life. The rain continued on towards the coast.
Our rain started to fall on Christmas afternoon!
What an amazing Christmas present!
We received almost 50mm in slow, light, drizzly rain that continued on for a week. The fall of 50mm just pushed up the rainfall total for the year so that 2009 was our 2nd driest year of our records (by 2mm).
Until December 25 we were on track for our driest.
The rain has continued into January 2010 with another light 18.5mm. This has made for a disappointing holiday for the Kids but the country side is soaking up all the rain.
Suddenly everything is green, the wild ducks have returned to the little rain that ran off into the dam, there isn't much water in it but the wild life doesn't care.
A myriad of different happy frog calls now dominate the night-scape.
The grass has exploded into green and is rapidly reaching for the sky!
The grapevine leaves with their unique green-yellow colour, are a joy to see.
As I type this the smile on my face widens as I have just found out another cyclone is forming to the North of Oz.
Where will this one spin on to?

Excellent news.
We didn't get any of the cyclone rain where we are. Hopefully next time.
Hopefully it will spin our way, we sooooo need some rain here!
How wonderful. Rain is such a joyous event when your soil is so parched, and there are no frogs!
Such a great gift. It also lifts ones spirits I should imagine, almost so you want to throw of your clothes and dance in the rain and mud naked. oopps carried away there..sorry lol
I wouldn't mind if that cyclone spun it's way down to SA, we could do with a bit of rain here.
